We've only ever fought side by side, never against one another.
Often people get sentimental over supposed bonds and hold back unintentionally, even during training sessions.
[Even Aubrey-
Saved his life, after he goaded her into inflicting a near fatal wound. It was a stupid reaction that would have cost her life in any other situation.]
[I'll see you tomorrow read at XX:XX. Akechi's content to leave it there. Puts his phone face down on the kotatsu table and -
Picks it back up. ]
I suggest you spend the night at the Machiya. Since we're taking a new route to an area unfamiliar to me, we may need to leave earlier than usual to ensure our schedule is maintained. It would be prudent of you to be here.
Eren knows the route. Has a key. Akechi doesn't need to greet him, so he doesn't bother waiting. The request wasn't to spend time together - only to have him come over for tomorrow morning's outing. Their house has been Eren's second home for awhile now. The man has his own rounds to make with the people here and when he's done -
Akechi will be at the kotatsu as always, hunched over the small table with 1001 Fun Facts in his hand.]
It's a starting point, nonetheless. Even if the vision ends up being less than accurate, it must have stemmed from somewhere.
Often our own cognitions hold memories we can't access. That succubi may have shown you such.
There is also the possibility it was a delusion meant to trick you. Your skepticism is wise and a valuable tool that will help you find the truth among whatever lies exist.
[It's fascinating - when he thinks of monsters, Izutsumi's face never appears among them. Akechi sees a mirror image more often than not. Conjures up politicians whispering secrets in pristine offices coated in smoke. Envisions others placed on a pedestal by the media as the best among them, knows full well their hearts are rotten behind the scenes.]
I won't deny you should prepare yourself for some degree of shock. It's only natural when someone doesn't look as you remember them.
But the same goes for you - whether illusion or reality, your mother may be different. Act different. Look different. Nothing is certain until you two meet.
[The quest is pretty straight forward and simple, if a little menial. Find rats. Kill rats. Don't get bitten by rats. Easy. And even if he does get bitten, he's fairly certain that whatever plague they might be carrying won't be passed onto him, and that his body will take care of whatever it is quick enough. Honestly, he doesn't really need a partner for this, but the shop keep insisted on having someone to watch his back, even with Orthrus standing by his side, absolutely ready to consume ratsnacks.
And Akechi is here too. Lured by the prospect of free food for life, maybe? It's a good deal, and it's what Kazuya cares most about. It's a nice change of pace besides. Gives him something menial to do, and actually work his mind instead of sitting inside most of the time cooking or baking or whatever. It's enrichment, or something.]
You're a detective, right? You should be able to find traces of them better than I can. [He says, leaning over to check behind some wayward garbage bags, just in case.] Want a tetrakarn in case they try to bite you? You might die if you're not careful, apparently.
[ Lumindeas opening up to them is a boon. Maruki doesn't trust it any more than he does Visium, not for one moment, but its existence and their ability to travel to it brings to light so many new mysteries and puts to rest some older ones. He and Akechi have believed all along that this world they knew back in Somnius was not all of this reality to be seen, and that Vaeros was not the grand manipulator behind the scenes that others believed.
Being proved right is a hell of a drug.
Aside from that, the presence of the quest board offers endless new opportunities to worm into the nooks and crannies of this reality, learn all that they can. He and Akechi had combed over it for the better part of an afternoon, climbing the ladders and writing down potentially lucrative information avenues in their notebooks before conferring. Perhaps it's unsurprising that in the end, they landed on the same initial choice: Escorting a dignitary to Visium, high stakes and high reward.
There's no danger in it, really, despite the requirement to be able to provide physical and magical protection if needed; it's an expectation they easily succeed on their own, to say nothing of their combined might. A stupider person might find it almost boring, in fact, but being able to come close to someone in a position of power is an opportunity they haven't been granted yet in this reality. Even if this dignitary ends up being only one of many members of a cabal, they now have a face and a name emerging from those shadows. It's more than they had before by a mile.
As they wait aside the carriage for the dignitary to emerge from the castle and join them, alone for the moment, Maruki inclines his heard toward Akechi. ]
This is your element. [ Getting in close with the wealthy and powerful. Close enough to kill, but choosing not to. ] I'll follow your lead.
[She won't- Akechi knows that. He also knows there's little that can prepare a person to acknowledge a parent's misery.]
No, of course you wouldn't.
However, seeing it - perhaps it's somewhat comparable to relate it to grief. It's something you may have to contend with before you ever open your mouth to ask a question. Prepare yourself for it.
Though my hope is the same as yours - that she has lived a content and worthwhile life.
I don't need your protection from a rat. Keep your skills to yourself.
[Do not tetrakarn him. He would rather DIE ACTUALLY. Anyway-
Detective turned pest controller - he might as well have a canister on his back to spray this shit with.
Robin Hood sits at the fringe of his heart, ready to act. He has his own ailment reducing skill hidden inside it.
He leans to the side to check behind a large bin of trash next to the bags Kazuya's moving. Wonders if they should burn down the buildings instead. A rat infestation is difficult to end by plucking them one by one. The affair is fruitless before it even begins.]
To your point though - a rat is a rat. It hardly needs extensive deduction to find. If they're bold enough, they'll come out on their own. We could also bribe them with food.
