[ That grin drops right off Maruki's face.

He pauses, hands still curled in the dish towel, then resumes drying them off before leaning backwards to toss it onto the kitchen counter. He misses, it winds up on the floor. He'll deal with it later.

With that gone, though– he isn't sure what to do. Lingering in the dividing doorway is awkward. Akechi might not want him to sit next to him. There's nowhere else to go, though, not really, so...

He comes over to perch on the arm of the couch, hands folded calmly in his lap as he watches Akechi carefully.
]

I remember.

[ Clear as day. The day one of his speeches as an assemblyman was all over the news was a highly confusing one in their home. ]

[ No, Maruki won't be upset. Never. He does briefly close his eyes when Akechi mentions the lengths he went to to hire hackers, brings one hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose, but it drops away after just a moment so that he can look at Akechi when he asks–

Nothing. Maruki doesn't get a chance to ask anything that immediately springs into his mind at that confession, because Akechi asks first.

The question seems entirely unrelated to what he just said. Maruki knows that somehow, it isn't. His heart aches for it already.
]

Someone's personality...?

[ If he thinks that he has anything in common with that slimy politician just because they also happen to share genes...

But Akechi asked a question, and Maruki has an answer. Calm, decisive. They discuss these things often. It's fine.
]

There's evidence that personality has some genetic components, but it's influenced just as much by environmental factors – slightly more, in fact. But no, it's certainly not decided at birth. Everyone is shaped by the culture they live in, the way they're raised, the people they interact with... all sorts of things.

[ He watches his son's face carefully throughout that explanation, and then his own expression softens. ]

What are you worried about, Goro?

[ His heart squeezes and sinks in his chest. More than anything, he wants to tell Akechi that a meeting like that likely wouldn't go how he's imagining it – that the answer he's looking for to that question may never come. It's a bad idea. A terrible one. He wants to tell Akechi that he wouldn't let him go to that confrontation alone, that even though he's nearly old enough to make those sorts of decisions without their input it's still something Maruki would want to be there for if only to protect him, but–

What will you think of me after, the deepest anxiety of all seeping through.

Maruki's voice remains steady, even. Comforting, grounding.
]

Why would I think of you any differently at all?

[ He slips off the arm of the couch to sit on it properly, though he still keeps the distance between them. ]

If you met him, it wouldn't... [ He struggles for a moment with how to phrase this, then smiles in spite of the subject matter. ] It wouldn't be like that movie we watched the other week, where the sleeper assassin was activated when he heard a specific phrase. Meeting him, speaking with him– it would be hugely significant, yes, and it would affect you, but it wouldn't change who you are.

[ He does reach across then, rests his palm between Akechi's shoulderblades. ]

You are your own person. You always have been.

[ That insistence, that he bore any responsibility for his mother's death, is the cornerstone of that breakdown weeks ago. Maruki's hoping that it's something he'll be able to work out with a counselor, but that will take time... Hearing it now, all he can do is rub a slow, gentle circle against Akechi's back. ]

Okay. Let's follow that line of logic together.

[ It's untrue, all of it, but he has to meet Akechi on the ground he currently stands on, not try to yank him off of it before he's even heard him out. ]

If you meet him and discover that that's the case, and you are alike, and you think it puts Rumi and I in danger... What will you do with that knowledge?

[ The idea alone is too much to bear. It would break Rumi. Maruki knows that. She's the strongest person he knows, but the few fault lines she has run impossibly, dangerously deep. Her family, the family they've painstakingly created for themselves – it's something she could never stand to lose. ]

That's what would really kill us, you know.

[ Quiet, not accusatory whatsoever. ]

Your life is your own, and it's with us. No matter what you find out about yourself, or him.

[ When you were a child, you used to tell me about dreams where you thought you hurt people. Do you remember them? Do you think they have anything to do with what you've learned?

In the silence that settles around them like a heavy winter blanket, Maruki repeats it over and over in his head. Tries to work up the courage to speak the words.

He can't. Not because he fears the answer. Because he fears encouraging this line of thought. There is no part of him that believes Akechi is capable of anything nearly as terrible as what a man like that could possibly do.

He'll avoid that fate after meeting him, and they'll continue to enjoy their life together. Their little world of three.

Akechi's posture is terrible. They're nearly the same height by now, but he's hunched on the couch, and Maruki has to bend his neck to press his face down into the soft crown of his hair. He inhales, holds it. Exhales. Drops a kiss there before picking his head up.
]

I'm not going to discourage you from seeking him out. But I'm going to put one stipulation on it, Goro.

[ Maruki has never successfully been the firmer parent. It isn't a hard edge to this voice that makes this request sound like the demand that it truly is – it's the desperation that does it, pure and true. ]

If... When you go to see him, let me take you. I won't go in with you, of course– I'll wait in the car, nearby if you need me. [ If anything happens. ] I want to be the person you see immediately afterward. Whatever happens, you won't have to handle it alone.

[ He squeezes his arm tight around Akechi's shoulders, doesn't let go. ]

Agreed?
