That doesn't surprise me. Japan had a similar structure with kabuki. Both roles were, and continue to be, played by men.
Though it was originally started by a woman - they were banned from the artform shortly after its creation.
Of course, that's changed in modern times. Women are no longer banned, I believe, but I think it's still a male dominated field. I don't know much about it beyond that.
If there's ever an opportunity to show you, I will. The amphitheater may have a variation of it performed for the masses - while it won't be exact, it may be close enough to give you an idea.
To describe it - that's difficult. It's a dramatic form of storytelling that has dancing, extensive makeup and costumes. It's very...theatrical.
