Maybe it's Akechi's intelligence. Inigo may be hanging out often with people smarter than him, but it has more to do with Inigo's baseline intelligence not being all that high than it has to do with those other people actually being smart or not. So Akechi definitely stands out to him as someone who seems exceptionally smart.
