[Eren has no desire to push past any point he shouldn't. That certainly can't be said every day, but it can be tonight. So, when he puts an arm around Akechi's shoulders, it's only really over the back of the couch. If the back of the other boy's head happens to rest there, their contact will only be due to some awkward positioning, easily blamed on Eren.]
I haven't seen Featherman Neo. Will you wish for it?
[ Blamed on Eren it is. The seconds after the adjustment make it nigh impossible to not touch and Akechi can't help if the back of his neck rests on an outstretched arm. They're both tall and take up space. The couch isn't that big. Neither of them acknowledge it, so it continues on. ]
No. The only reason I wished for this was to show you technology from our world and the entertainment in it. It's a children's show that I've long stopped watching - it means little to have it here and doesn't serve a greater purpose for us.
[ That's a kind description of what Akechi can only assume is barbaric in nature. A functional justice system, however flawed, is a rarity. ]
You may find my description boring - often, most of my tasks involve paperwork and waiting around. Catching people in affairs, lost pets - that's the bulk of my work. Though when I get to work with the police, matters become more exciting and I've been involved in everything from government scandals to homicides. That requires more thought - often, I'm up for hours thinking about connections, interviews and the like. A single connection can solve a case, after all.
If you want the shards back, I'll give them to you.
I want to see it. I can't wish for it for myself.
[Eren isn't placating him. He isn't lying. It would be just as much a gift to him as it is to Akechi, seeing his face light up, hearing him explain something new. It's become such a sacred thing to sit and watch this ridiculous kid's show.]
[ There's something to keeping an ally occupied and there's more to not giving into every shitty whim.
Feathermen falls somewhere in between. It's not about the shards - Akechi's overflowing with them. ]
I never expected you to care about something so juvenile. [ It's not a yes or no. He tears off a larger clump of the bread to hold out to Eren. ] Help me finish this. I don't want it to go stale on the way back and I'm getting full.
[Eren hits a wall. He can't explain without truly explaining. He can't tell Akechi that he cares about Featherman because he cares about Akechi. He can't explain how things become sacred. He takes the bread and eats it. The chewing makes a good excuse for silence. He tries to think of what to say...]
I just like it.
[No more explanation, no real room for argument. He just likes it. Right?]
[ I just like it. Akechi accepts the simplicity for what it is. A child liked it for no rhyme or reason outside of bright colors and grand heroics. As he got older, he became interested in the plot, the morality of it, but still-
Sometimes he just likes it too.
He lets out a hm and doesn't question it further. Eren's arm feels hot against his neck, but he doesn't move away. ]
Everything you see in the background is Tokyo itself. While some of it is embellished with old school effects, its core remains the same. Around the corner, there's a crepe shop I frequent. It didn't exist then though, so there's no sense in trying to make it out. Not that you could with the resolution of this video.
[ Other people in their position, Maruki realizes, might act differently.
He can easily imagine someone else who knows the depth of Akechi's grief thinking that they might be doing him a favor if they wished for a photo of his mother from the crystal, or something of that nature. Bringing him a blanket belonging to a recently departed friend – because that is what Izutsumi was, is; not an ally, not a useful tool, but a friend – would have the same effect. It's not a balm to tear grief open and let its blood spill fresh. Some wounds should be left to scar over. There are enough things that happen to them that will catch and pull and reopen them on their own; Maruki won't be the one to do it purposefully.
So Izutsumi's blankets remain in the storage closets. Her toys, her clothes, her weapons. All of it tucked away from sight, never from mind.
He and Akechi are the same in that way. Perhaps it's not for the best, but it's the truth, and that's what matters in the end. ]
It's not easy to get up there by any means, but there's one spot that's conducive to laying back and watching the stars.
[ He saw Izutsumi up there from time to time. Figured out how to clamber up without ninja skills of his own, even though he panicked having to come back down. It's nothing he and Akechi couldn't try on their own. ]
With the weather warming up, the nights are getting clearer. We can try it sometime. And you can laugh if I fall and break my back, of course.
[ Akechi doesn't have to clarify whether he's giving in or not; the request will happen regardless. Maruki will do it himself if he has to. And he'll probably have to.
His elbow connects with Akechi's ribs, eyes rolling up and away. ]
You just impressed upon me how large the mountain is! And I doubt you'd want to boulder five feet from the base... Small fall, please. Spare me.
[ Akechi raises his hand to Eren's eyelevel and pinches the smallest amount of bread between his fingers. Then he pops it right into his mouth. ]
Even this is too thick, but it gives you an idea. They fill it with simple ingredients like fruit or chocolate and fold it up. It looks like a heavy meal, but it ends up being lighter than it seems.
[It sounds good. Overwhelming, maybe. He glances down at the loaf of birthday bread and tears off another chunk, putting it in his mouth to slowly chew. It's nowhere near as sweet. He nods his head.]
I wouldn't be opposed to that. I doubt he would mind either.
[ Not at all. It's simple, Maruki wants ideas for food and it's a light meal - even if Akechi defaulted to that cafe simply because it was trendy. He didn't dislike the food. ]
We should get some of the ingredients prior - fruit, whipped cream and items of that nature.
[ Maruki's going to ask them to run the stupid errand so they may as well get it out of the way. Really, Akechi should just make Eren do it. Takes a second to consider it and-
Oh - he perks up, entire attention captivated by the television once more. ]
This scene is ingenious. The giant robot wasn't made with CGI - it was done using the toys they would eventually sell and right after this episode aired, I recall a commercial for it. [ A beat. ] Of course, the robot's lazers and powers aren't real. That would be foolish. [ Another beat. ] That's primitive CGI.
[He perks up. Eren is so grateful for it. He never knows how many times he'll see it, or for how long. Everything Akechi said feels beyond his understanding, but he wants to ask a thousand questions anyway, just to hear him answer.]
Camera tricks - yes. I couldn't begin to explain the process, but it's likely something you could manage even with your camera. It's all about perception.
[ He isn't surprised. It's only natural Eren would move on from taking simple photos after he mastered it. He's a man easily satisfied, yet craves more all the same.
He stretches his arms outwards - his legs soon follow. If both settle against Eren afterwards, it's only a mistake and Eren can move if he's so bothered by the touch. Akechi's comfortable. He won't be the first to pull back. ]
Explaining the 'how' of it is difficult, but watch the next scene - that spaceship about to attack Tokyo is CGI. It looks different than everything else, doesn't it? As if is something's off? It lacks the details that come with signs of life and frankly, looks fake.
A computer created the model and it's placed into the show during the video's editing process. It was a technological marvel at the time this was made, so it was placed in on occasion.
[ The implication is as clear as the patter of the softest footsteps above his room. No matter how quiet she was, he was awake and could hear it. It was worth the same weight as a door opening in the dead of night. He never cared about her comings and goings. Wasn't bothered by her presence or lack thereof.
Can't parse why tonight of all nights the snowglobe, the supposed hole behind it, the imaginary scratches along the wall - all of it irritates him.
But the weight of his own blanket against his chest doesn't. The sound of Maruki's voice doesn't. The chatter of insects outside doesn't. ]
Azathoth could patch you up quick enough. You won't have to sit with the consequences of your stupidity for long.
[ Maruki won't fall. There's no doubt in his mind. He won't fall if they climb up together. A not so small part of him hopes he does anyway. ]
I'm not against it. [ He doesn't hate looking at the stars. ] We won't have such opportunities when we return. [ His stomach churns at the thought. He can't settle on why. ] You'll be disappointed when all we end up with are bug bites though.
[It's an opportunity Eren won't miss. When Akechi shifts, Eren shifts too, until the other boy is practically in his lap, legs slung over, Eren's arm still over his shoulders. He feels hurried to continue the conversation, to draw no attention to anything other than what's playing on the screen. The explanation is still a bit over his head, but he seems satisfied with this:]
So, it's a computer thing...
[As far as Eren can tell, computers can do basically anything.]
You're right. It does look fake. Almost like it was painted on or something. I guess, since they can't actually film anything like that...
[ He moves to the side with the elbow at his ribs. In his infinite mercy, and because of his good mood, he doesn't shove back. ]
I'm certain Azathoth would catch you before anything could happen. You, and it, are remarkably quick to adapt to situations. I'm sure falling off a cliff would be no different.
[ It's different when they're both awake and aware. Any shared moments taking naps at the Machiya are over with the summer heat - Akechi no longer seeks the same warmth he did in the winter. It took only one humid day and waking up with all his clothes sticking to his skin to end it - he blamed Eren. Still does.
But it's different like this. He doesn't move - not an inch after they're in a new, more intimate position. He can't stand it. Hates it. Thinks of every reason to rip away from his body, but-
It's cold this morning, so he tolerates the warmth against his thighs and-
He's in a good mood and Eren enjoys this shit, so he lets it slide. Akechi isn't sure why.
The talk goes to CGI and spaceships. The question's inane enough to make him scoff under his breath - the same old peasant nonsense as always. It's a good distraction. He'll stay here for a few moments, and peel back when the finale ends. ]
No, not at all. There are methods to get into space, but crafts like that are fiction and nothing more. Spaceships and alien invasions are frequent occurrance in media and modern entertainment. It's a long standing trope for Featherman in particular.
[It's a gift and Eren knows it - always is when Akechi allows them to get close. He doesn't move an inch for fear he'll scare the other man away. Regardless of whether or not Eren calls the bread "birthday bread", his intention was to please Akechi tonight. If he wants to move away, Eren won't fight him. He'll only hope...]
I didn't think space was somewhere you could go. There are people here who have traveled through it, though. There are probably a few people here who would even call themselves aliens.
[Who's the first person Neil goes to when he finds out he can grant wishes? Charlie. Who's the second person? Well. Flat. But! The third person is one of his favorite people, Akechi. Neil reminds himself that he mustn't seem too excited. His very serious detective friend is, no doubt, taking this very seriously.]
Akechi! I suppose you've heard about these rogue wishes by now.
