Part of him wants to pick up a fleshy bit, to lick his hands clean from the blood, just to taste, but the logical core in his brain that's still firing tells him to not. Not because it's wrong or that he shouldn't because its a step too far, but because they could be infectious just from this alone, and that part of him still wants to keep everyone safe.
Turning himself into a mindless crystal monster would run opposite of that fairly easily.
So that urge has to be dealt with, and the easiest way to do that is immolation.
