That doesn't surprise me. Japan had a similar structure with kabuki. Both roles were, and continue to be, played by men.
Though it was originally started by a woman - they were banned from the artform shortly after its creation.
Of course, that's changed in modern times. Women are no longer banned, I believe, but I think it's still a male dominated field. I don't know much about it beyond that.
